.The first thing to do is to assure that your computer has a good antivirus such as avast, Kaspersky, make sure that it is up to date
.It is recommended to use Tune Up utilities or System Mechanic to help pc be safe and clean.
.Review your startup programs, the more programs that you have in the start-up group, the longer it takes for your computer to load up all those programs into the computer's random access memory (RAM).
.Uninstall old unused softwares, to do this click on start and then click on control panel.Click on Add or Remove programs and remove/uninstall the software.
.Clear your web browser's cache, websites generally have large number of web pages and hundreds of photo's which get stored whenever you visit a website so that the webpage loads faster when you open the site next time which eventually slows down the PC.So it is strongly recommended to clear the web browser cache.
.Be sure to run the Disk Defragmentar which comes along with Windows® XP and also with Windows® Vista. This tool is used to arrange the files in a continous sequence instead of being stored in different sectors which makes the reading/writing of data slow.
.Run Disk Cleanup. The most common areas purged by the Disk Cleanup tool include: temporary operating system files, temporary Internet files, temporary program files, downloaded program files, Recycle Bin files, and Setup log files.
